Instructor Training Our train-the-trainer programs allow you to become a Red Cross instructor and train others to save lives. To become an instructor, follow these steps: 1) Contact the American Red Cross Shasta Area Chapter and complete an Application for Authorization to Teach form. A current basic level course certificate for the course you are interested in teaching is recommended. 2) Take Fundamentals of Instructor Training. This course is a prerequisite to all Red Cross instructor specialty courses. It is designed to offer potential Red Cross instructors an opportunity to become familiar with the services of the American Red Cross as well as basic teaching techniques. Fundamentals of Instructor Training (required) Course fee: $25.00 Lay Responder First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor, to teach the following courses: *First Aid/CPR/AED for the Workplace *First Aid/CPR/AED for Schools and the Community *Blended Learning First Aid/CPR/AED *First Aid Responding to Emergencies *Sport Safety Training Course fee: $150.00 Instructor Training Schedule JANUARY-DECEMBER 2008 ***YOU MUST COMPLETE BOTH STEPS LISTED BELOW. Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT) Step 1 COST $25.00 This 5-hour course introduces candidates to the history, structure and activities of the American Red Cross and prepares instructor candidates to teach American Red Cross specialty courses to diverse populations. Instructor candidates will be introduced to the policies and procedures of the ARC to ensure course consistency, quality and appropriate training. The basic level class is reviewed in the first portion of the instructor class where instructor candidates will participate in a class role-modeled by the Instructor Trainer. Course Fee: $65 Course Length: 9.5 hrs Prerequisite: Must be at least 17 years of age. Must acquire or posses a current (within 1 year) Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT) certificate or be a current instructor in another Red Cross discipline. Must have a current Adult, Child, Infant, CPR /First Aid card and Babysitter's basic participants card. A copy of these requirements must accompany your application. Participants must demonstrate all skills and successfully (80%) complete the written exams for Babysitters basic course to continue. The instructor portion, the candidate will become familiar with all course materials, administrative procedures and demonstrate, through 1 practice teaching assignment, the ability to teach the basic course material. The Shasta Area Chapter is very excited to bring you on-line courses. These courses allow you to complete the lecture portion at your own pace and convenience. We are only offering Adult CPR, First Aid, and AED. We hope to eventually offer more courses. In order to take our on-line courses you will need to meet the computer and internet connection requirements. Once you have completed the lecture portion you must attend the skill practice /testing. At the time of registration, you will choose a date for your skill session. The skill session will last up to 2.5 hours depending on the course you are taking. You must pass the lecture /skills with an 80% or better in order to receive your certification. **During the skills session there is no review on the lecture portion of the course. * If for any reason you miss your skill session, you may reschedule one time only for a $15 fee. If you miss the next skill session you will forfeit your course fee and will need to pay an additional fee of $25 to re-register for a skill session. Cost: $75 Our professional rescuer courses are designed for people who have a job-related duty to respond in an emergency. This course is known by other names such as BLS, Healthcare Provider CPR or Level C CPR. Students who are required to take this level of training include nurses, law enforcement and EMS personnel, fire fighters, business and industry response teams, lifeguards, flight attendants and others who must take action in emergency situations. Upon completion participants will receive a one year certification in CPR and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for the Professional Rescuer. The books and pocket masks used during the class are included in the fee. We'd like to congratulate you on your commitment to building a healthier, safer community by becoming an American Red Cross authorized provider and helping us reach even more people with lifesaving training. As an American Red Cross authorized provider, you are leveraging more than 90 years of lifesaving expertise and a brand that is trusted and recognized as being the premier health and safety training organization. Red Cross training materials incorporate the most current standards of care that meet OSHA Guidelines for First Aid and the Emergency Cardiovascular Care Guidelines. And because Red Cross training is standardized and recognized by national, state and local authorities, proof and validity of training can easily be provided to regulatory agencies. Your local American Red Cross chapter is committed to providing you with the highest level of customer service. Technical and programmatic support is just a phone call away, and marketing materials are available at little or no cost so that you can promote your training programs. Your local chapter also provides administrative support, including issuing course certificates and maintaining instructor and student records, so that you can focus on what's most important-providing lifesaving training. If you have any questions, please be sure to contact your local Red Cross chapter. New First Aid/CPR/AED Program Course Combinations Provide More Training Options. The First Aid/CPR/AED Program reflects the Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) 2005 Guidelines and provides you with a broader range of training options than ever before, including adult CPR, automated external defibrillation (AED), injury control modules, and infant and child CPR. The modular design of the program allows customers to build the first aid and safety programs that are right for them. The First Aid/CPR/AED Program Instructor's Manual provides course outlines and lesson plans for 14 courses and course combinations. We heard from instructors that course outlines for every possible course combination in the First Aid/CPR/AED Program would be valuable. We responded with the development of 15 additional course outlines designed to match the multiple course combinations that customers may request. The new course outlines (see MS Word file available below) provide you with clear directions to conduct each combination ensuring that all skills and information are covered uniformly without needless repetition. This expansion results in a total of 29 course combinations that can be taught from one instructor's manual to help you offer your course takers the training they need. Thank you for the critical work you are doing in your community everyday. Each person to whom you teach lifesaving skills might have the opportunity to put those skills to use in a life-threatening emergency. Together, we can save a life. 1. What is an Authorized Provider? An Authorized Provider is an individual who is or organization that has a Red Cross-trained instructor who can provide American Red Cross Health & Safety programs in-house. By becoming an Authorized Provider, you can build your own training team to teach Health & Safety courses to employees of your business or members of your organization. When do I have to fill out an Authorized Provider Agreement? All Authorized Providers must fill out an Authorized Provider Agreement as soon as they become instructors. 3. Do I have to make an Authorized Provider Agreement for myself as an instructor or the organization that I teach for? If you are an American Red Cross instructor who teaches our courses at various sites, you can fill out an Authorized Provider Agreement in your name. When you submit Course Record Forms, you should note your name under "name of authorized provider." When you are going to teach in a new training site, contact Health & Safety Department at 530-244-8000 and ask to add the site to your agreement. If you are an instructor who teaches regularly in one location or if your organization has ARC instructors, you can fill out an Authorized Provider Agreement under the name of your organization. 4. What costs are involved in becoming an Authorized Provider? There is no cost to become an Authorized Provider. The instructor must pay for the course materials, however, and must pay an Authorized Provider fee for each student taught. 5. My company contracts with other agencies for services. Can we offer classes to our customers as well as our employees? Yes. The Authorized Provider system allows you to offer training as a service to your customers, clients, or others in your community. In order to do so, you need to make arrangements and sign an agreement with your local Red Cross chapter. 6. My company has offices in other cities that are outside the jurisdiction of my local American Red Cross chapter. Can I train employees in other cities? Yes. Our nationwide network of American Red Cross chapters makes it easy for you to train employees throughout the country. CHALLENGING COURSES: Challenge Fee: $50.00 This condensed course requires passing the written test with 80% or higher and demonstration of all required skills without any assistance. There is no prerequisite or certificate required for this class. However, there will be no instruction or time for reading, practice or other review. Please study your CPR training materials prior to attending challenge. Students who do not pass the challenge will be referred to a full-length course at an additional $20 fee. To set up a challenge appointment, please call the chapter and speak to Health & Safety Department. Challenges are set for Mondays or Fridays during the hours of 10-3 PM. |
